چکیده

Long waves in a current of an inviscid fluid of constant density flowing through a channel ofarbitrary cross section under disturbances of pressure distribution on free surface and obstructors on thewall of the channel are considered. The first order asymptotic approximation of the elevation of the freesurface satisfies a forced Korteweg-de Vries equation when the current is near its critical state. Todetermine the coefficients of the forced Korteweg-de Vries equation, we need to solve a linear Neumannproblem of an elliptic partial differential equation, of which analytical solutions are found for constantcurrent and rectangular or triangular cross section of the channel. It is proved that the forcedKorteweg-de Vries equation has at least two solutions when the current is supercritical and the parameter2 is greater than a critical value 2 c > 0. It is also proved that there do not exist solitary waves in a currentexactly at its critical state. Numerical solutions of steady state are obtained for both supercritical andsubcritical currents.(Received: March 18, 1988, revised: August 24, 1988)

An approximate model for slug flow heat transfer in channels of arbitrary cross section

In this paper, a novel approximate solution to determine the Nusselt number for thermally developed, slug (low-prandtl), laminar, single phase flow in channels of arbitrary cross section is presented. Using the Saint-Venant principle in torsion of beams, it is shown that the thermally developed Nusselt number for low-prandtl flow is only a function of the geometrical parameters of the channel c...

Locally forced critical surface waves in channels of arbitrary cross section

Critical long surface waves forced by locally distributed external pressure applied on the freesurface in channels of arbitrary cross section are studied in this paper. The fluid under consideration isinviscid and has constant density. The upstream flow is uniform and the upstream velocity is assumedto be near critical, i.e., uo = u c + e2 + 0(e2), where 0 < e ~ 1 and u c is...

Experimental Investigations into the Collapse of Simple and Reinforced Thin-Walled Channel Beams under Bending Loads

In this paper, collapse behavior of simple and reinforced thin-walled channel- section beams, subjected to three- point bending, is investigated. Many simple channel- section beams of different geometry and some reinforced ones were tested, and their strengths after collapse were obtained thoroughly. Since the available theories in this area are complicated and little attention has been paid to...
